Dieting all my life and still getting fatter!

I must have lost hundreds of kilos over my 44 years, gaining them back faster each time. As I grew older it got harder to keep my weight down and I realised that dieting alone can’t be the solution.

I started an aerobic fitness routine to burn more calories. Walking, rowing, rebounding - trying to fit over 90 minutes of exercises 6 times a week into my already busy calendar just added stress to my life! And huge frustration – my weight problems didn’t change!

Why it is so hard to keep my weight down?

I started Internet research, reading about body composition and how to influence weight - and discovered that
- A human body loses muscle and strength from the age of 25 – and I am 44
- Weight loss from most diets is largely muscle – and I have done about every diet ever
- Resistance training increases bone density, which usually decreases with age, leading to osteoporosis
- More muscle helps increase energy

And my main learning:

Each kilogram of muscle uses about 100 calories per day!

Now I understood why I had to eat so little to keep my weight down!
I wasn’t strong enough! I didn’t have enough muscle!!
And I understood something else. If I gained 5kg of muscles, then my body would use about 500 calories more! Even if I slept all day!!!!!
Walking, lifting, climbing stairs - all would be so much easier! I understood that it is so important to be stronger!
Getting stronger actually means becoming younger! Getting lean – not bulky – without dieting, that was my new goal!


Resistance Training to gain Strength

So I started another weight lifting routine, as I had at least ten times before – three times a week, for half an hour or longer while continuing my aerobic exercise program. I began with very light weights - and hated every minute! After four weeks I was constantly sore, more tired than ever and no lighter. My motivation level dropped to zero.

It was not meant to be.....

..... but read on!

More Internet research – and I found Pete Sisco and Static Contraction Training. Training only once a week or less for half an hour - that REALLY sounded like me!

I ordered the Explosive Fitness equipment and started the workouts in the way Pete described them in his e-book Train Smart.

IT CHANGED MY LIFE!

From the age of 16 I’d skipped dinner to avoid weight gain, and now I’m 44, can eat more than ever, have never been slimmer and fitter in my life before, and I’m full of energy and laughter. A recent test showed my body composition age as 35.3 (feeling like 25) and my toxic level 0.6%, which is extremely low. I have 7% less fat, 2kg less weight, about 2.5 kg more muscles, and average strength gains of 140% – within half a year. A huge gain, and what a difference! And without dieting at all!

I follow the recommended resistance training routine to the letter and still do some aerobic exercise. Our equipment’s digital display shows my strength increasing every workout. The exercises are very intense but not draining, and I look forward to each workout. It’s fantastic.

Soon friends wanted to try our equipment, and I enjoyed teaching others and seeing their strength increasing over the weeks.

I wanted to open a Fitness Studio for Busy People. People who are health conscious but just can’t seem to take time for the usual 3-times-a-week programmes. People who want to get fitter and stronger, but don’t like to lift weights.

And we did it! My partner Tim (who is as excited as I am) and I opened 7SECONDS Fitness in Wellington, in July 2004.
